definitely.
I actually like this movie. But not for the reasons you’d think.
I think this movie highlights the problems of the manic pixie dream girl. Tom likes Summer because she is super pretty and they like the same bands. We only see Summer through Tom so we never actually get to know her as a person - and it seems, neither does he. He idolises her. He obsesses about her. She breaks up with him, and when she does, he lashes out taking the same qualities he used to love and makes them ugly. I never thought that Tom was a nice person, and didn’t like the way he acted like Summer was a prize (and she obviously didn’t either). The fact that she married someone else at the end shows that, and when he asks for a reason she doesn’t really give him one (“it just felt right” is a non-answer) but thats because she doesn’t need to justify her actions to him, he never took the time to really know who she was or paid attention to anything she said so why bother. She told him she wasn’t looking for anything serious when they got together, and he refused to believe that. This movie shows that Mr Nice Guys, for all their proselytising are not great people.
Unfortunately I don’t think many people got that and said she was a bitch for not staying with him. Guess what? She doesn’t have to. Just because someone in the relationship is happy doesn’t mean the other person is, and you shouldn’t stay in the relationship if you aren’t happy - which is what she was doing.
There was a quote from Joseph Gordon-Levitt in which he said he didn’t think Tom was a nice person either and was surprised that so many people supported him.
I beg to differ. But I
im so in love with this movie. =))
